AN EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT TOOL
Livestock Revenue Protection (LRP) is a federal crop insurance program approved by the USDA Risk Management Agency. Livestock-RP is designed to insure against unexpected declines in feeder and live cattle prices.
Price Protection
Protection for feeder cattle is provided using the CME feeder index. Protection for live cattle is based on the USDA five area weekly average.
Subsidy & Payment
The premium cost is subsidized by 35%-55% by the USDA and payments are not due until the end of the insurance period.
Coverage
Insurable weights for feeder cattle are unborn calves up to 999 lbs. Insurable weights for live cattle are between 1,000-1,600 lbs.
